Through the Fire: How People with Mental Illness Are Empowering Each Other
Fredrick Vars, J.D.
Workshop
Date: Saturday, 9/26
Time: 9-10:15am
The author of this 2026 book will read short selections and invite audience questions and discussion. Possible subject areas include: crisis response, jail and prison, hospitalization, community care, housing, employment, education, and advocacy. Readings will be drawn primarily from the stories of the 50 people with lived experience interviewed for the book, but may also include some relevant policy context. At the end of the presentation, attendees shall:
1) Gain insight into several areas of mental health policy where peers play key roles.
2) Be inspired by the stories of peer providers and advocates.
3) Learn more about under-used, evidence-based, non-coercive mental health policies.
