Alabama Legal Advocacy in Perilous Times: “We Don’t Know the Difference”

James Tucker, J.D., Ann Marshall and Charisse Rupert

Workshop

Date: Friday, 9/25

Time: 10-11:15am

Famously, when Alabamians were asked how they fared during the Great Depression, many replied, “We didn’t know the difference.” The same might be said of civil rights advocacy including, e.g., the Wyatt v. Stickney mental health case, in Alabama. The state motto, “We dare defend our rights,” reflects accurately the state’s approach to defending against such rights advocacy. This session will explore that rights advocacy by addressing the intersection of organizing, law, policy, politics, finance, and other topics through a discussion with an attorney and two long-time mental health advocates.
