Advance Directives: A Tool to Combat Psychiatric Oppression and Decarcerate Care
Neilah Rovinsky and Emma Munson-Blatt
Workshop
Date: Friday, 9/25
Time: 2:30-3:45pm
This workshop will explore how advance directives can support rights protection and advocacy of those experiencing mental health crises and how to support community members in crafting their own. It will offer lessons learned from our experience in Vermont working to help people prepare advance directives. We also hope to provide information about where to look for resources about advance directives in other states. Learning Goals and Objectives: 1. Understand what an advanced directive is and why it matters 2. Learn what an advanced directive may cover and what it may not 3. Learn about our experience in Vermont helping people prepare legally valid advance directives, and informing them how to enforce them. 4. Develop an understanding what a Ulysses clause is. 5. Recognize why advance directives are a vital tool during this time of rampant pathologization of race, gender identity, immigration status, and more
