Pearl's Story A Consumer's Perspective on the Need for Culturally Competent Services

The presentation addresses diversity and multicultural perspectives with specific content from a life predominated by years spent in mental health institutions, the legal system, and finally, successful culturally competent treatment. The author tells her story of the challenges she faced in receiving mental health care, and puts a human face on the need for implementing culturally competent services and developing a better understanding of the connection between culture and mental health issues. The audience is invited to participate with questions and their own personal experiences as practitioners, family members, and consumers.
