SAFE (Survivors And Families Empowered)

Kristina Kapp, Andrea Barnes, Peter Stastny, M.D., (virtual presenter), and Steve Barnes

We are a coalition of psychiatry survivors, families, and mental health professionals who believe in the power of hope and the resilience of the human spirit. We have come together to bring HOPE to individuals, family members and allies. Recovery and wellness is possible beyond the medical/illness model. We are elevating the voice for choice and raising awareness about alternative options. Our experiences have taught us that deconstructing the fears and myths about mental illness will reduce the over reliance on restrictive interventions which interfere with recovery. We realize the importance of recognizing and celebrating individual resiliency journeys while emphasizing that there is no one-size-fits-all path to recovery or enlightenment.

Advocating, Activating & ADVANCING “Options “ – S.A.F.E.
Learning Objectives:

  1. CULTIVATING A Shift – We are not requesting Alternatives any longer. Now we are demanding and developing Options

    • To challenge a mental health service system that too often does more harm than good with its absolute reliance on models of care and treatment based on faulty archaic principles.
    • Realizing the importance of recognizing and celebrating individual resiliency journeys, while emphasizing that there is no one-size-fits-all path to recovery or enlightenment.
  2. “Nothing about us without us”

    • Our experience-based model is validated by our seeing in our lives what is possible.
    • Through Advocacy we Activate Rights, dispelling any myths and misunderstandings about who we are and what we do.
    • We present statistics and facts of research supporting our principles and mission.
    • We seek to reduce over-reliance on restrictive interventions and restore hope in recovery.
    • Let us join together to Educate, Equip and Empower the community and providers to elevate Options that heal and do no harm!
