Health Literacy and Patient Rights

Beckie Child

Beckie will discuss the findings from her dissertation study “Health Literacy and People Diagnosed with Mental Illness.” When people (especially people diagnosed with mental illness) assert their rights or ask questions, the stigma may have profound consequences. Beckie will host a discussion about how to improve health literacy in the mental health setting and medical settings.

Objectives:

  •  Participant will identify ways in which building health literacy will access their patient rights
  •  Participants will also discuss how knowing their rights will help educate them about their health literacy
  •  Participants will identify strategies to improve their health literacy and advocacy skills to promote the assertion of their rights
