Defending Against Forced Electroshock: A Strategic Update From the Front Lines

Gina Teixeira, J.D., Dennis Feld, J.D., Laurel Spahn, J.D., and Arthur Baer, J.D.

Forced electroshock continues to be one of the most frightening items in psychiatry's arsenal. This workshop will feature attorneys who have successfully (and unsuccessfully) represented clients subject to petitions for involuntary electroshock, and activists who have organized public campaigns to protect individuals targeted for forced electroshock. Participants will discuss their cases and respective strategies, including legislative efforts and collaboration between attorneys and activists when the legal process fails to protect. Presenters will include lawyers from the Connect Legal Rights Project, New York Mental Hygiene Legal Service, and the Legal Advocacy Service of the Illinois Guardianship & Advocacy Commission
