Recent Changes to the Medicaid IMD Rule: What You Need to Know
This workshop will discuss a recent Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services rule that changes the way that the federal government pays for services in psychiatric hospitals. The rule partially repeals the long standing Institutions for Mental Disease Exclusion, which has encouraged states to expand community mental health services and reduce their overreliance on psychiatric hospitals and promoted compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act's (ADA's) integration mandate and the Supreme Court's Olmstead v. L.C. decision. States must take proactive steps in order to enact the changes made by this new rule and advocates at the state level can have an impact. This workshop will discuss what changes the new rule made, what to expect over the next several months and years, and what advocacy options are available.
