The ADA, Sheltered Workshops & Minimum Wage

Jennifer Mathis, JD & Ruby Moore

This workshop will discuss current and potential litigation challenging states' over-reliance on sheltered workshops for people with disabilities and failure to offer supported employment services in competitive, integrated work settings.  It will also explore possibilities for building on this litigation to challenge the over-reliance on segregated day treatment programs at the expense of supported employment services for people with psychiatric labels.  We will also discuss the new Workforce Investment Opportunities Act and strategies for using this law to expand opportunities for competitive, integrated employment and reduce segregated alternatives.
